Mamet's ground-breaking and controversial play on the male-female power struggle, annotated with an introduction, notes and commentary. "An ear for reproducing everyday language has long been David Mamet's hallmark and he has now employed it to skewer the dogmatic, puritannical streak which has become commonplace on and off the campus. With Oleanna he continues an exploration of male-female conflicts begun with Sexual Perversity in Chicago in 1974. Oleanna cogently demonstrates that when free thought and dialogue are imperilled, nobody wins." (Michael Wise, Independent) In Oleanna "John and Carol go to it with hand-to hand combat that amounts to a primal struggle for power. As usual with Mamet, the vehicle for that combat is crackling, highly distilled dialogue unencumbered by literary frills or phony theatrical ones." (Frank Rich, International Herald Tribune)

Simple version of Oleanna
By Greg Osborn
I had to buy this very short story for my college Critical Thinking class. I was relieved to see that it is a pretty bare version that sticks to a simplistic form. Some other students in the class had bought a version that had easily 80 more pages (I'm not sure how this could be given how short the story is) so I was very happy with my choice. Mamet is an excellent play write and I found his story to be fantastic. I recommend watching the film AFTER you read the story because I've noticed the film easily persuades you from your original stances and I believe this is due to the visual and body language used.....so read first!

Challenging, though dated
By Sugith Varughese
I am a fan of much of Mamet's work and saw this play in the original production off-Broadway. Then, it was about political correctness gone mad, whereas now the play feels like it's really about power. As a power struggle between the teacher and the student, the play is funny and gripping, but not as intellectual as it was when it first came out. Read it as a polemic, (which I think Mamet originally intended) and it will fall flat. Read it as modern Strindberg and it will resonate.
