About the Author
Bishop Guy Gaucher is editor of The Complete Works of St. Therese. He lives in Avon, France.

Groeschel is professor of pastoral psychology at St. Joseph's Seminary in New York. He is the Director for the Office of Spiritual Development of the archdiocese of New York, he is also a founding member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. He is the founder of Trinity Retreat, a center of prayer and study for the clergy.

Tuberculosis: Not Coated With Sugar

The Passion of Therese of Lisieux has two objectives: to follow as closely as possible, and in chronological order, Therese's life during its final six months; and, to use authentic documentation to sketch a portrait of her in the face of death. A detailed description of Therese's medical condition and great suffering from tuberculosis dominates the first portion of the book. The second tries to portray her sanctity in all of its human reality. The book "does not therefore contain theological or spiritual reflections."

Gary Gaucher has done a remarkable job. As Fr. Benedict Groeschel writes in the Introduction: "Ponder her life, her words, her deeds and her death and you will see that she has changed you." As Gaucher, a Carmelite and bishop in the diocese that includes Lisieux, writes: Therese's "'little doctrine' can no longer be said to be the pious reflections of a meek and mild person who coated everything she touched with sugar."

Though this is an important and insightful book about Therese, a Doctor of the Catholic Church, it is not the place to start. Read Story of a Soul before reading this book. Those who have read at least the Story of a Soul will gain much insight and appreciation of the saint and her sufferings by reading The Passion of Therese of Liseux, but this book will probably be wasted on or of little interest to others.

Excellent read- just a few issues

This is an excellent read about St. Therese's last year or so on earth, and how her soul developed as her body crumbled.

My only complaint with this book is that the author's interpretation of St. Therese is clearly colored by some of the post-Vatican II errors in Catholicism in general and about Therese in particular. This is particularly true when it comes to St. Therese's desire to save souls, something the author writes was "in the language of her day". He diminishes or discounts, often chalking it up to errors in the Catholicism "of her day" (his unfortunate tendency to almost apologize for Therese when quoting language or traits about her that are not popular by modern standards is the most annoying part of this book) her strong evangelistic fervor- not only bringing souls to God because He loves us so, but also to save them from Hell. St. Therese's letters, her poems, her autobiography, and indeed her whole life's message show that she firmly believed in this constant teaching of the Church- Christ died on the Cross to save our souls. This lack of belief in the necessity of evangelism for the purpose of salvation shows too when he discusses St. Therese, St. John of the Cross, and the Gospels.

He also says in his comments that most Catholics in that day were "counting their works" and storing up their merit. While it is true that Jansenism was still affecting Catholic faith and practice, St. Therese speaks glowingly in both her letters and her autobiography about her family's teaching her to make small sacrifices by the use of, among other things, the sacrifice beads and her book for her First Communion. She says in her letters that this training was part of the ground of her vocation. This being the case, I don't think it's correct to say that she was "freed" from this climate, as the author says, just because St. Therese no longer needed those aids. She was also no longer a child! He seems to have placed some of the Protestant views on the Catholic faith into this book.

These errors are why I cannot give the book four or five stars, because the fervor of St. Therese to save souls and her views on sacrifice and redemptive suffering are too essential to her message to feel that any book about her is accurate when those views are weakened or diminished. Despite this, it is definately a must-read for any lover of the saint and will enhance your understanding of and love for St. Therese.

During the Stalin years Russia had four great poets to voice the feelings of her oppressed people: Pasternak, Akhmatova, Mandelstam and Marina Tsvetayeva. The first two survived the terror, but Mandelstam died in a camp and Tsvetayeva was driven to hang herself in 1941.

This comprehensive selection of Tsvetayeva's poetry includes complete versions of all her major long poems and poem cycles: Poem of the End, An Attempt at a Room, Poems to Czechia and New Year Letter. It was the first English translation to use the new, definitive Russica text of her work. It also includes additional versions ascribed to F.F. Morton which first appeared in The New Yorker: these rhyming translations are actually the work of Joseph Brodsky (who lived at 44 Morton Street in New York).

'Tsvetayeva is one of the great poets of the century and David McDuff's translations are very good. This is all the more remarkable because, like the poems they translate, they rhyme. There are overlaps with Elaine Feinstein's excellent but unrhyming translations of the same poet, but not too many. McDuff conveys Tsvetyeva's commitment to poetry's musical force, Feinstein substitutes a beautifully nuanced syntax for music; Tsvetayeva shines and appals in both' - Martin Dodsworth, Guardian

'It must be said right away that those who want to have an inkling of what Tsvetayeva is actually like, and that includes her form, her rhyme, and the tone of that accompanies form and rhyme, will have to go to McDuff. His diligence with metre and rhyme is remarkably successful, and is the only proper tribute to the poet's linguistic virtuosity. Readers may find that Feinstein comes across more fluently, but that fluency is not Tsvetaevan. McDuff has caught her abruptness, her veering and tacking, and has tried to show something of the curious modern music this produces - "modern" not through free verse but by dint of straining traditional patterns to breaking point' - Cencrastus

Although generally less well known here than Pasternak, Akhmatova and Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva is counted by some critics as the greatest of these four major poets of postrevolutionary Russia. However, as veteran translator McDuff indicates in his introduction, the sounds of Russian poetrywhich to this day remains formally traditional in its use of rhyme and metercan never be captured in English. Further, Tsvetaeva presents a particularly difficult problem to the translator because her transcendent reputation rests precisely on the aural values of her verse. That said, McDuff must be congratulated for his brave attempt to reproduce those formal qualities. If we cannot have Tsvetaeva herself, these stand on their own as creditable English-language poems. The selection represents the entire scope of her remarkable career from her simple and charming early lyrics, first published in 1910 when she was 18, through those recounting her privations and hardships during the years of upheaval in Russia, to the poignant poems written in exile after 1922. It includes all her major long poems, such as the stunning Poem of the End. Although it is unclear whether Tsvetaeva was officially ostracized on her own account or because of the political actions of her husband Sergey Efron, her poems are heart-rending in view of her tragic life and eventual suicide. Love, the loss of youth, poetry and the Motherland are the core subjects of her poems, which are infused with high passion and a heroic tenacity of spirit. For non-Russian speakers, this volume is a new window on poetry in the Stalinist era.

Terrible Translations

Finestein's translations are so awful, it is no wonder that few English speakers want to know who Tsvetaeva is. She loses the rhythm, rhyme, literary devices, and everything for which Tsvetaeva's poetry is so loved. The duality of meanings and word play is also completely lost. Try Angela Livingstone's translations - they are excellent.

Poems by a reliable witness

Marina Tsvetaeva was born in Moscow in 1892, published her first poems at 18, and was married with two children when the Russian Revolution began. She endured numerous hardships -- one of her children died of malnutrition -- and a period of exile. She returned to Russia in 1939, but was so beset by her circumstances that she committed suicide in 1941. These passionate and autobiographical poems are deep and important. I don't know Russian, so cannot comment on the translation. From them one learns about Tsvetaeva the artist: her subjects are love and transformation, nature, poetry, love, and her complicated, exasperating country -- and, later, the bleakness which enveloped her. Poetry was serious business in Russia, and this poet was one of the greats.

Art in life

Read this book! and read about her life. She witnessed so much darkness and her words open up these experiences, lay them bare. I really wonder what her writing would have been if she had lived a different life, one without so much tragedy. She also recognized, as did Virginia Woolfe, that it is difficult for women to write amidst the responsibilities of everyday life -- "I have no time to think . . . I have only ever been myself in notebooks . . . for all my life I have been leading a child by the hand." Her work stays with you long after the book closes.

We Live on Uncle Sam's Stove!

Originally published in 1955, PROTESTANT-CATHOLIC-JEW is still worth reading and still significant. It is a good deal more than a tour of America's religions; it is a book about what it means to be an American. Herberg got a few things wrong, and a good deal has happened since 1955, but he was a wise man who was close to the mark on several important issues.//Briefly, Herberg argues that, contrary to Israel Zangwill and other theorists of a single assimilating melting pot, the United States has three melting pots: a Protestant melting pot, a Catholic melting pot, and a Jewish melting pot. According to Herberg, each subsequent generation of Americans considers itself less and less "ethnic." But as ethnic consciousness declines, religion becomes more important, so any intermarriage among different ethnic groups stays within the same religious denominations. For example, third-generation Polish-Americans (almost invariably Catholic) don't marry other Polish-Americans, but they do choose Catholic spouses. Their children become Catholic Americans, and part of the Catholic melting pot. // Herberg claims that the three melting pots are so important that there are now three fundamental ways of being an American. One can be a Protestant American, a Catholic American, or a Jewish American. The only exception Herberg makes is for the members of the Eastern Orthodox Church, whose intellectuals confuse everyone by insisting on Four Great Faiths rather than Three.//Herberg admits that the triple melting pot thesis has certain flaws. Specifically, he regards African Americans as a permanent outcast group that will likely never become part of the larger Protestant melting pot. (He says nothing about black Catholics and black Jews.) He also acknowledges the existence of a few members of various Eastern religious sects, but he clearly considers such people too marginal to think very hard about.//Within a few years of the publication of PROTESTANT-CATHOLIC-JEW, the whole idea of the melting pot--even a triple one--became unfashionable. Eminent scholars and politicians told us about "unmeltable ethnics." At the same time, religious intermarriage has become more common, making one wonder if the triple melting pot thesis is still valid. And, since the Immigration Reform Act of 1965, large numbers of Asians have moved to the United States, creating the outlines of a nation with Five Great Faiths: Christian, Jewish, Moslem, Buddhist, and Hindu. Unfortunately, Herberg himself is no longer around to interpret these trends, so we'll just have to sit here and cook for awhile.

a 50's era classic

This is one of those books I was supposed to read in college but didn't. I should have, and not just so I could look an old professor in the eye, should we be assigned to the same section of the hereafter. Some of what Herberg has to say, especially about the sociology of American Judaism, is very dated now, and yet his central ideas about American religion are as true now as then, despite Vatican II and a major shift in the numbers and social positioning of Protestant "denominations". In very brief, his point is that mainstream Americans have faith in Faith, or maybe in something called the American Way of Life, not in God--that is, not the God of either Judaism or the main stream of European/Middle Eastern Christianity. He makes a strong sociological case for his point, too. And he would admit that there are certainly Jews, Protestants, and Catholics of whom this is not true. I think he is weak about thinking through the spiritual consequence of that shift, but he is a sociologist, not a theologian. So, is the book worth reading after all these years? Well, if my short summary upsets or surprises you, then very much YES. All the more since the claims of the American Way of Life to be a proper object of faith seem so much more problematic now than they did is his day.

Classic on American religious development

Herberg brilliantly analyzes, with both insight and feeling, the development of the American religious landscape. We owe much of our cultural and religious identity to the waves of immigration that came to our shores and the particular ways in which these newcomers were assimilated to the American way. Our situation has changed somewhat since Heberg's work in 1960, but his careful, lucid, and detailed explanation of who we are is still highly worth reading. I warmly recommend it to my students.

guess who's got a new shovel, then?

for those of you who are familiar with the bbc series, "ripping yarns," "more ripping yarns," and "even more ripping yarns," nine shows produced from 1976 to 1979, this book is a complete text collection of all the shows. the book reads like a script. you may think this would be off-putting, but it is not. on the contrary, the book contains so much extra material which is not in the show videos, it is almost like seeing new shows. this is michael palin and terry jones at their very, very best. there are moments in the book when you will just laugh out loud in amazement at how witty and creative these guys can be. "ripping yarns" was created post python, and the humor here is, well, just a bit mellowed, more refined, subtle, and yet effortless. in my dumb opinion, I like these shows (gasp!) better than monty python. if you buy this book, you will laugh! all of the stage directions are in this book (not in the videos), and these printed extras are just as funny as the dialogue. there are moments in ripping yarns that are comic genius. having repeatedly watched the "ripping yarns" videos, I can tell you, the book is funnier. the complete text of all nine yarns! as the book's back cover says: "the book is ideal reading after 'lights out' in the colonies."

This is the best children's book I have ever read

This is the best children's book I have ever read. We keep it on our coffee table and every visitor, child or adult, picks it up and is immediately hooked. They love the story, the illustrations, and the fact that the reader is drawn into the story by the chatter between Hallie and her grandparent farmers, Lollie and Pops. What a great story about a little girl's fascination with all the love, color, activity, plant life, and animals on the farm. It's fun to anticipate her grandparents' answers to her endless questions and to share in the lessons she learns at the farm that she so loves to visit.

Peter Gottschling is founder of SimuNova, a company that works on developing the Matrix Template Library (MTL4) and offers C++ training. He is a member of the ISO C++ standards committee, vice-chair of Germany’s programming language standards committee, and founder of the C++ User Group in Dresden. He earned his Ph.D. in computer science at Technische Universität Dresden in 2002.

concise, and easy to read with good examples

I just got this book, but taking a brief look at the layout, i can tell i really like this style. It covers the basic language and some of the new features (new as in c++11, c++14) and i like the way it's flagged on the paragraph to let you know that its a part of the newer standard. The examples are pretty short, and i like that. It's not cluttered with 50 pages of text for some example code. So therefore it's more like a great book for me to be in my collection as a quick reference when i need to look up features that i'm not that familiar with, like smart pointers. I got the book as a refresher as my last c++ book was i think the c++03 standard. This book is geared more for scientific programmers, the author briefly points out arithmetic libraries used with c++ for different types of math like differential equations. Although it says it's a book used and taught to beginning students, i think it's an excellent companion book as well. So if you dont like the typical layout of most c++ books, then try this one out. If you need step by step, then i'd say get a different book like lippman's & lajoie's c++ primer or prata's c++ primer plus

My favorite C++ practice and experience book

This may be the best C++ technical book ever. First, let me mention that the typeset text in the paper edition has exquisite highlights in a blueish-purple typeface set against black which makes it very easy to use. I love the annotations which describe features found in C++11 and those found in C++14. There are numerous diagrams, almost like whiteboard sketch's - little visuals - to help with the understanding of detailed language features. I love the editing of Addison-Wesley programming books and this is not an exception, polished, well done and crisp.

The author uses numerous technical algorithms for examples. See his matrix inversion library at [...] as an example.

This is the book to bring your C++ knowledge up to date (mid 2016) with C++11 and C++14 modern development practice. The book has been tested in academia and real world development for three years and covers everything from the tool chain and build process to templates, lambdas and scientific libraries.

The book that talks less and tells more

A good book that don't treat you as some one of low IQ.

I am a Fortran programmer and wanted to learn C++ to get a grip of source codes of OpenFOAM. The topics covered are so enormous that you will take a while to cross each page.

Its concise size of only 444 pages tempts you to carry it always in your bag to help you read it during cup of coffee. A plus point contrasting with all those 900-1200 paged most famous and most expensive books.

Being the first edition, contains few trivial errors. (Such as saying square-root cannot be negative by "mathematics" at section 1.6.1, though his intention of making the program to provide non-negative is meaningful by convention; In section 1.7.3 "myfile" should read "square_file")

As the cover says, it is an intensive course. I am still in third chapter of generic programming which is very crucial for my purpose of understanding OpenFoam codes.

Good for content review, not so good for NCLEX study.

Not a bad resource for pharmacology class, but not a good resource for NCLEX study. There seems to be some inconsistency with the principles in the rationales throughout the book. For example, for NCLEX, you're not supposed to add anything to the question stem that isn't there, and you're not supposed to read into an answer to the extent that you need to start making up a story for why the answer choice could make sense. Yet there are questions in the book where selecting the "right answer" would require you to infer something that is NOT in the question stem, or make up a story for the answer to work.

E.g. There is a question about an obese person with tachycardia, restlessness, etc., shows up in the ER, and the right answer is that the nurse asks the client how long he's been taking appetite suppressants. Well, you could ask the client IF he is taking them, but there's no clear indication anywhere in the stem that he is; more to the point there are other answers that make sense, so why would you necessarily infer that the patient's problem is abuse of appetite suppressants when you haven't ruled out other possibilities that are just as likely (e.g. use of amphetamines)... The answer fits, but you have to add information to the stem that isn't there, and you could just as easily add information for other answer choices that makes sense... In short, the question strays from the very principles of problem solving that the NCLEX is designed to test, such as don't add things to the stem that aren't there, and don't make up a story for why an answer could work.

On the other hand, the content review of this book is very helpful. My complaint is that the questions that undermine NCLEX taking principles might just add more confusion and frustration to somebody who is trying to master those principles (and pass the NCLEX).

Needs updating

This information in this book will help some, but not all of it. The publish date is 2014 and some of the information is outdated which leads to wrong answer and false positives. If you are using this to help study for an exam then make your first choice for study materials to be your text book. Don't use this exclusively as some of the answer and rationale may be wrong now.
