The son of a steelworker from Pennsylvania tells the inside story, warts and all, of his career as a successful investment banker at two of the biggest, best-known, and most controversial firms in the world—Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase—during a historic and turbulent period in US history. Mark Melio’s personal anecdotes and observations illustrate the self-absorbed culture, hypocrisy, and rapacious practices of Wall Street’s leading banks, how he bought into the fiction that “the customer always comes first,” and how investment banks morphed from once-proud partnerships into predators in constant search of new ways to scalp clients. This is a rare glimpse by a thoughtful observer behind the scenes of an institution that built America’s “new” economy and then nearly destroyed it.

Good for Mark Melio that he took the opposite approach ...
By Andrew B. Parkinson
As someone who has used banks (including J.P. Morgan) to raise capital on the non-public side, this book is a real eye opener for anyone who enlists an investment bank to raise capital (public or private). Goldman's mantra of "long-term greedy" at the expense of clients, and the way the banks put themselves before their clients in general, really makes my blood boil. It's now clear who was funding the deal trophies (I have a bunch!) and the expensive hotels and entertainment expenses that the entitled bankers abused. Good for Mark Melio that he took the opposite approach to his clients and stayed true to his family's roots. This book reads like a thriller, is a great read regardless of your Wall Street connections, and I highly recommend to all. I read most of it on a flight to NYC to visit a banker, and felt much better armed to negotiate our financing plan. Thanks Mark! Well done.

I really enjoyed reading this book
By Kiteboy
I really enjoyed reading this book. I'm not that sophisticated with how investment banking works and Melio really simplified it for me. I used investment bankers to raise money for my company (I have several $10K tombstones at my expense on my shelves) and I am really disillusioned that my so called "business partners" were actually fleecing my company. The book describes the tension between Melio's ethics and career ambitions. In the end, Kissing Tony, shows him the way.

A Fascinating, Fast Read
By SuperSmart Carbon
A fascinating, fast read. Mark Melio tells his story with a unique voice, and one that is "unfiltered" and therefore true to its source. The writing is clear and without pretense. This alone would recommend the book. However, this story also has distinguished settings, inside notable financial institutions, and interesting times, such as the Reagan-era growth of Wall Street and the 2008 market meltdown. The author expresses a clear point of view without moralizing or succumbing to self-congratulation. The work is concise so you can enjoy its tales in a single weekend. I really appreciated my weekend with it.
