About the Author

John J. Crowley is president and CEO of Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington, director of the SWOG Statistical Center, and a faculty member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The author or coauthor of more than 350 refereed articles, book chapters, and other publications, Dr. Crowley is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the International Biometrics Society, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer. He received his BA (1968) from Pomona College, Claremont, California, and his MS (1970) and PhD (1973) in biomathematics from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Antje Hoering, PhD, is a senior biostatistician at Cancer Research and Biostatistics (CRAB), Seattle, Washington. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and an affiliate investigator at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Hoering is the lead statistician of the SWOG Myeloma Committee, the SWOG Early Therapeutics Subcommittee, and the Stand Up To Cancer, Pancreatic Dream Team. She is the coordinating statistician for the Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy, the International Myeloma Committee, and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team. She serves as a consultant on a variety of industry-sponsored studies and has been the biostatistics representative on two Type B meetings with the FDA. She is member of the American Statistical Association, the International Biometrics Society, and the International Myeloma Society. She received her BS (1985) from the University of Tubingen, Germany, her MS (1988) in physics from Oregon State University, Corvallis, and her PhD (1991) in physics from the Max Planck Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Heidelberg, Germany. She transitioned into biostatistics with a three-year NRSA postdoctoral fellowship with the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Thorough overview

This book is not and does not try to be a shop manual. What it is, is a well-done primer on the theory behind the various systems in a motorcycle. The chapter on engines was fascinating to me. It explains, in rough historical/chronological order, the development of various engine designs, and how each was a reponse to weaknesses in previous designs and how each one introduced it own problems (while at the same time older designs were tweaked in various ways to minimize problems). The design variations include number of cyllinders, number of crankshafts, orientation of cyllinders with respect to each other, orientation of the crankshaft with respect to the motorcycle, ratio of bore diameter to stroke length, various arrangements of valve trains, etc. Two stroke engines are also covered. Illustrations are extensive, but tend to be pulled from other books or from manufacturers manuals, so sometimes include unnecessary detail, especially in the carburation chapter (which was very complex and a little over my head). Some chapters (e.g., exhaust systems) were not as detailed as the engine chapter and were slightly disappointing.
I followed this book up with Keith Cameron's Sportbike Performance Hankbook, which explains some systems in more detail. Cameron's book is ostensibly a book for souping up your motorcycle, but in the end managed to convince me that I want to keep my bike stock unless I don't plan to use it on the street: the manufacturers generally know what they are doing.
One caveat about Motorcycle Basics Manual: the book was authored in England and uses U.K. terminology. A glossary at the end gives U.S. equivalents, but a few things are left out.

An Excellent Reference

I was delighted with this book for two reasons: one, it answered all the random questions I had from talking to bike owners or mechanics (What IS a desmodromic valve? How does a clutch work, exactly? Why is the exhaust pipe length critical to tuning a 2-stroke?). Two, I love illustrations, and these technical illustrations are top-notch. There are beautiful section and cutaway views of engines and subsystems, all properly detailled and labeled.
Don't expect this book to allow you to fix your bike. But expect to gain a better understanding of how things work, motorcycle design trends and influences (often from a historical perspective), and why things break and wear out. And that will pay off the next time you're talking to your mechanic, or the guy at the auto parts store.

An excellent and fairly comprehensive explanation of motorcy

Motorcycle Basics Manual is an excellent and fairly comprehensive explanation of how the major systems comprising a motorcycle work. It is clearly written and well illustrated with detailed line drawings. The general organization of the material is sensible, and each chapter leads off with an outline of what will be covered. Basic theory is followed by a brief engneering history, then design variations and their purposes are covered. This book does not take the place of a shop manual, but will certainly be a pleasant and informative addition to any weekend mechanic's libarary. It is much more ambitions than Motorcycle Owner's Manual by Hugo Wilson, for example, and for real enthusiasts,well worth the effort.

Beautiful book. Every single surface of this book is color-able, even the inside of the dust jacket! The pages are thick enough to prohibit bleeding through. The only thing that would make this book better is if it were bound differently. Several images span both pages, so some of the art is lost in the crack of the spine, rendering those parts inaccessible for coloring. It would also be cool if this book came in hardback so that it could act as a durable coffee table book once you're finished.

TIP: If you are wondering what kind of medium you should use, I strongly suggest Staedtler triplus fineliner marker pens (photo attached). I got my 20 piece set at Target. The colors are vivid (see photo of the first page I've colored), the tip glides over the paper smoothly and easily, and the 0.3 mm point means you can color in the smallest of spaces (this book demands a tiny point!)

What a wonderful book, full of delightful, whimsical, illustrations, and every single amazing picture will captivate you! But there is even more! The book in itself is beautiful and well made. It boasts 82 enchanting illustrations,(13 two page) on the front and back of each page, a beautiful book cover, and the last two pages fold out in opposite directions creating another amazing 4 page illustration, and every single one of them you can color.

This is the most beautiful coloring book that I own and the only one that captivates and inspires all of my grown children and every one of my grandchildren, both the boys and the girls.

This book truly creates quality family time for those rainy afternoons.

1. Colored pencils work well in this book and Fiskars Gel pens, Staedtler Triplus Fineliner markers and Staedtler Triplus Fibre tip pens do not leak through the pages and are wonderful for coloring in this book.

2. Most Markers and some Gel pens seep through the pages, so they cannot be used without damaging the next picture. These markers do leak through the pages (Sharpies, Bic Mark-it, Stabilo 88, and Pentel)

3. This book is square (9 6/8" x 9 6/8") with pages thicker, than most coloring books they are almost cardboard.

UPDATE; Secret Garden by Johanna Basford is now published on the same heavy paper used for Enchanted Forest, I just received my copy and it is amazing. Perfect for Staedtler Triplus Fineliners and Fibre tips plus Fiskars Gel pens plus colored pencils.

May 3, 2015 A customer just told me that she ordered a book and got it in about 3 weeks, so Amazon is shipping out books as they get them in but not able to keep up with orders because this is such an amazing book.

This book may very well ruin my life....

Hello, my name is Tifanie and I belong to colour's anonymous.
It all started 3 weeks ago when I walked into costco and saw this beautiful book sitting on a shelf. After flipping through the book while walking through the store, I decided to put it down and not purchase it, due to just having made a large purchase and couldn't afford something "frivolous." 3 days later and I couldn't stop thinking about this book, so I headed back to Costco, only to find they were completely out of stock. I rush home to order it online, and found it also out of stock. Thus began my search for this book. 2 weeks later, I finally found it, restocked back at costco (yes, I didn't buy it on amazon, it's STILL out of stock)

1 week having this book and the quality of life in my house has plummeted. The children have been feeding themselves on microwave kraft dinner and toast, while wearing their pj's all day and given free range of video games. The husband quietly weeps in the corner as he watches his wife fall deeper and deeper into her addiction. My friends shake their heads in annoyance at me as I yet again, bring up another conversation of my new book, or 172 pencil crayons that I use to colour them with (crayola and craz-art, I'm not fancy enough for prismacolors) My hands have reached early arthritis, but I push through the pain. My thumb pads are permanently indented now and feels really weird to use them on anything other than a pencil crayon. I'm sure as the weeks go by my obsession and addiction will slowly wittle its way back into a more normal stance, perhaps I'll colour only an hr a day, instead of 6.

Alas, I tease. I have thoroughly enjoyed this book, and totally understand why it is so difficult to find. It's beautiful. The only complaint I have is as you get into the book, the pictures that span two pages get harder and harder to colour in the middle. I've mostly used pencil crayons, but the markers I have used (stabilo 1mm) haven't leaked through, so it's nice to have the thick pages where many mediums can be used. It can get a bit monotonous at the beginning with aallll the leaves to colour, but if you use your imagination, you can make it fun and exciting with each leaf.
I can't wait to get her new book, and have already added it (and prismacolor pencils) to my birthday list xD

About the Author

ANDREW J. KURDILA, PHD, is the W. Martin Johnson Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His current research focuses on structural dynamics, dynamic systems theory, control theory, and computational mechanics.

Great Buy

This book is easy to read and provides a lot of useful examples. The concepts that are harder to grasp have in depth examples that clarify the process. The problems provided at the end of each chapter are a good mixture of applicable and conceptual. This is a great book for understanding vibrations as a whole.

In terms of the condition of the book, it was exactly as described. I couldn't be happier.

I am having a hard time getting into this book.

I really like Chopra and I like how Clough and Penzien added random processes towards the end of the book. It provided me some room to grow.

the print quality is poor

The content of the book is excellent, but the print quality is poor. I'm disappointed with the quality of the printing of the book, some pages uncut and I are some pictures and graphics are blurry. The book looks like a photocopy.

Fantastic Studying Tool!

I am studying Occupational Therapy and have five books on anatomy (Netter's, Anatomy Coloring Book, etc). NONE has been as helpful as this one. In the previous books, all of the muscles are shown together, which makes identifying and remembering each muscle very difficult. In this book, each muscle is displayed individually, so you can see where they originate and insert, and understand how the muscles perform flexion, abduction, etc. They are grouped by region (lower extremity, head, trunk, etc), by function, and each illustration lists innervation, origin and insertion. Did I mention the bony landmark section and the nerve plexi illustrations?
I wish I had this book for my intro anatomy course, but thankfully a classmate introduced me to it...now Kinesiology has been a breeze!
