The Republic has fallen.
Sith Lords rule the galaxy.
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi has lost everything . . .
Everything but hope.

Tatooine—a harsh desert world where farmers toil in the heat of two suns while trying to protect themselves and their loved ones from the marauding Tusken Raiders. A backwater planet on the edge of civilized space. And an unlikely place to find a Jedi Master in hiding, or an orphaned infant boy on whose tiny shoulders rests the future of a galaxy.

Known to locals only as “Ben,” the bearded and robed offworlder is an enigmatic stranger who keeps to himself, shares nothing of his past, and goes to great pains to remain an outsider. But as tensions escalate between the farmers and a tribe of Sand People led by a ruthless war chief, Ben finds himself drawn into the fight, endangering the very mission that brought him to Tatooine.

Ben—Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, hero of the Clone Wars, traitor to the Empire, and protector of the galaxy’s last hope—can no more turn his back on evil than he can reject his Jedi training. And when blood is unjustly spilled, innocent lives threatened, and a ruthless opponent unmasked, Ben has no choice but to call on the wisdom of the Jedi—and the formidable power of the Force—in his never-ending fight for justice.

From Booklist
This outstanding Star Wars novel arose from the author’s concept of a Star Wars comic series using the elements of a classic western. So we have a not-too-habitable frontier setting (Tatooine); a wealthy rancher with a hidden agenda (marrying a virtuous widow, among other things); the children of the widow and those of the rancher (mostly with more guts than sense); a bandit chieftain (Jabba the Hutt); marauding Indians (the Tuskan Raiders, very fully brought to life); the technology of farming in an environment that makes the Mojave Desert seem lush; and a host of life-forms ranging from krayt dragons to the pit-dwelling sarlaccs. Oh, and there is a drifter named Ben who wanders into town in the middle of all the conflicts and befriends the widow, though not as much as she would have liked. Deserves very high ranking among Star Wars fiction. --Roland Green

From the Author
Star Wars: Kenobi is a sweeping story that's part epic western, part high-stakes drama, part romance -- but it's all Star Wars, taking place in the early days of Obi-Wan's exile to Tatooine. The greatest hero in the galaxy faces his toughest challenge yet: He must stop being Obi-Wan -- and become Crazy Old Ben.

We've seen the Sith nursing their hatreds, patiently plotting their revenge; now we see a Jedi hero having to prepare for a long vigil, protecting the new hope of the galaxy. Tatooine is remote, which should suit the needs of an outsider wanting to remain anonymous. But it's also a close-knit community, and staying unnoticed isn't always easy when one has the public-spirited instincts of a Jedi!

A project I've been developing for years, Kenobi is in keeping with one of the themes I focused on in my Knights of the Old Republic, Knight Errant, and Lost Tribe of the Sith books: What does it mean to be a Jedi alone? Kenobi asks that question, and I'm excited that Random House has helped bring it to readers.

Beautiful. My new favorite SW book
By Trevor 1138
Let me begin this review by saying that I could not put this book down. Not because there was a galaxy-shaping event taking place, or a superweapon about to destroy a planet, but because i was so invested in the characters. Kenobi is easily the most human Star Wars book I have ever read, filled with characters that capture your affection instantly. The majority of the novel focuses on a relatively small squabble between a small town and the Tusken Raiders assaulting its people. However, by making his characters so real and so human John Jackson Miller makes you feel as if the universe itself hangs in the balance. It is this group of characters and their interactions with one another that shape the outlook and personality of a stranger in town known only as "Ben".

In my opinion, the book's greatest triumph is showing a softer side of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because of the former Jedi Order's rules against showing emotion, we rarely see Kenobi's human side in Episodes I-III. In this novel, however, he is on his own and truly alone for the first time in his life, allowing him to consider new viewpoints and learn to know entirely new types of people. The reader is kept appraised of his internal struggle through brief meditations with his former Master Qui-Gon Jinn. As the book progresses, he learns more about himself, the galaxy, and where he fits in a changed universe.

Whether you are a diehard fan of Star Wars novels or someone who simply appreciates the movies, this book will take your breath away. In just under 400 pages, Miller takes readers on an emotional journey with new characters of his own creation and old favorites. Whether you are a newcomer to the galaxy or a longtime resident looking for a refreshing point of view, this book will not disappoint.

A Long Time ago on Tatooine.
By Scott Sloan
An excellent Star Wars western. A perfect blend of western, firefly, and star wars. It really shows what an author can do when he sets out to write a "different" star wars book. Not filled with epic space battles or force battling jedi. A simple yet complex story of a Jed Master in hiding doing his best to remain anonymous, and watch over his infant charge. He settles down in the wastes of the desert with his eopie, and soon discovers the settlement over the rise. Kenobi moves at a good pace, and is filled with rewarding characters. Really a good read in my opinion. However, the one problem i have with the book, and its author is the way that the sand people are portrayed. I like my sand people with a little more honor, and more pleasant social dynamic. Miller portrays the Tuskens as near savages who would gladly murder their own children less they bring them shame and live their entire life bundled up in rags as a show that life is unfair, and often times sucks for those that dwell among the sand. Like i said little too muslim extremist for my taste and have no place in a Star Wars book. A real downer. Overall though Kenobi offers up some great insight into the Jedi Masters thought process as he tries to survive on Tatooine. Last thing, we get some teases of Kenobi meditating and conversing with the dead master Qui-Gon as we saw a little of in the novelization of Revenge of the Sith. Sadly Qui-Gon never answers Kenobi and leaves him all alone to fend for himself and make the best decisions he can. Good read could have been a bit better.

Stellar Star Wars novel from start to finish!
By Ruth Anderson
With the loss of his once-promising apprentice still a raw wound, Obi-Wan Kenobi retreats to the remote planet of Tatooine, charged with guarding the galaxy's hope of redemption -- young Luke Skywalker. But until that far-off day that Luke should finally meet his destiny, Obi-Wan determines to adapt to a life without the sense of community and far-flung driving purpose that he once knew. But despite his determination to remain unnoticed and unremarked, descending into obscurity even on a backwater planet such as Tatooine proves harder to accomplish than the one-time hero of the Clone Wars ever expected. With Luke delivered into the custody of his uncle Owen Lars for safekeeping, Obi-Wan -- now calling himself Ben -- determines to settle into the role of watchman some distance away, resigned to a life of watchful meditation. Getting drawn into the lives of the settlers in the area is the last thing he needs...

Dannar's Claim, a trading post, inn, and bar, operated by Annileen Caldwell and her children Kallie and Jabe is the center of life at The Oasis, the hub around which those brave souls attempting to eek out a living from Tatooine's harsh environment seek community and connection. Dannar's Claim also houses the Settler's Call, the brainchild of moisture farmer and entrepreneur Orrin Gault. The Call is a subscription alarm service, consisting of a fund managed by Gault that coordinates the community response to attacks on subscribers by Tusken Raiders. As the best friend of Annileen's late husband, the lives of the Caldwells and the Gaults are inextricably entwined. When Tusken attacks spike, led by the raider known only as Plug-eye, tensions spike between Annileen and her long-time friend, made worse by her son's insistence on joining Orrin's dangerous raids. As tensions between the settlers and the Tuskens mount, a reclusive stranger named Ben arrives, one whose secrets may hold the secret to the settlers' salvation...if he isn't destroyed first.

It's been YEARS since I read a Star Wars extended universe novel. I cut my science fiction-loving teeth on the likes of Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, novels which captured not only the feel of the original trilogy, but were superb storytelling that -- long before Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced plans to make new films -- opened new chapters and introduced new characters to the Star Wars universe. Thanks to Disney's reboot of the extended universe canon, the original extended universe novels that I loved are now no longer canon, but classified as "Legends." However, stories like Kenobi are stellar examples of these books at their best -- illuminating new facets and eye-opening possibilities in the lives of beloved characters like Obi-Wan whose screentime only provides tantalizing hints of their history and potential.

Ewan MacGregor's portrayal of a young Obi-Wan was a highlight of the uneven (to say the least) prequel trilogy, and portrayal heavily influences Miller's characterization of the Jedi Master in Kenobi. I've always viewed Star Wars, particularly Episode IV, as a western in space, and this novel takes the concept of a western space opera and turns it into a full-fledged, old-fashioned classic western epic. Obi-Wan -- now the hermit Ben -- is the retired Gunslinger who wants nothing more than to be left in peace. Orrin, the rancher-cum-robber baron whose once pure motives have been corrupted by a drive to consolidate power and succeed, while Annileen is the determined widow transformed into a businesswoman, one whose once-bright dreams have long laid dormant until the arrival of a stranger, the compelling and mysterious Ben.

Miller knows the story beats of a classic western, and therein lies the success of his exploration of the unknown chapter of Ben's life on Tatooine prior to the arrival of a blue and white astromech droid bearing a desperate plea from a princess. This novel is everything I never knew I wanted from a Obi-Wan-centric story, everything I felt the prequels wasted with an actor of MacGregor's potential bringing a youthful Kenobi to life. Miller brings Kenobi to vibrant, three-dimensional life, delving into the insecurities, questions, and sense of failure he must have grappled with following Anakin's turn to the dark side. Here Miller explores if a man who once thrived on action, who was conditioned to never let a call for help go unanswered, adapt to the life of a hermit -- if such a withdrawal from a society in need is even possible.

I absolutely loved how this novel fleshes out not only Ben's character but the culture of Tatooine, a world that plays a critical role in the Star Wars universe as the home of Luke, the birthplace of Anakin, and the site of a rage-fueled massacre of Tuskens that sets Anakin on a galaxy-shaking trajectory, culminating in his transformation into Darth Vader. While Ben's characterization is a welcome addition to the extended universe, and the settlers are deftly sketched western mainstays, transplanted in space, its the characterization of the Tusken Raider culture that proves most illuminating. On film they are faceless, mindless bandits -- here the Tatooine natives have a culture, history, and drive, led by the formidable, fearless warrior Plug-eye, a Tusken with secrets that, if discovered, could reframe the Tuskens' age-old conflict with the settlers.

Kenobi is peppered with echoes of the films, from mentions of Jabba and the Lars family to suggestions of greater events unfolding in the galaxy as the Empire rises following the Jedi's fall. But putting the Star Wars references aside, Miller has delivered a cracking good western capable of standing beside classics of the genre by the likes of L'Amour and Mulford. This is why I love science fiction, why I adore the Star Wars world -- Kenobi is page-turning adventure filled with compelling characters, explosive action scenes, intrigue, and a classic showdown between good and evil. For all the talk of destiny in the canon, for me Star Wars has always been a story of choice, of choosing light, of choosing to be the best version of one's self., and Miller taps into the timeless nature of that battle. I can only hope that Miller one day gets to revisit this universe, but if not, here he's delivered one of the most satisfying reads in this extended universe -- and if, like me, you can't help but view it as canon...who can blame you? This is a Star Wars (and westerns) at their best -- entertaining, thought-provoking, and just plain fun.

The Blood of Olympus (The Heroes of Olympus), by Rick Riordan

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen-all of them-and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood-the blood of Olympus-in order to wake.

The demigods are having more frequent visions of a terrible battle at Camp Half-Blood. The Roman legion from Camp Jupiter, led by Octavian, is almost within striking distance. Though it is tempting to take the Athena Parthenos to Athens to use as a secret weapon, the friends know that the huge statue belongs back on Long Island, where it might be able to stop a war between the two camps.

The Athena Parthenos will go west; the Argo II will go east. The gods, still suffering from multiple personality disorder, are useless. How can a handful of young demigods hope to persevere against Gaea's army of powerful giants? As dangerous as it is to head to Athens, they have no other option. They have sacrificed too much already. And if Gaea wakes, it is game over.

PRAISE FOR THE SON OF NEPTUNE

"Should pacing and wit continue unabated into the third volume, whose foretold European setting promises further freshness, fans will eagerly await numbers four and five."―Kirkus

PRAISE FOR THE LOST HERO

"Readers longing for a return to Camp Half-Blood will get their wish.... ...the action scenes come frequently as the three heroic teens fight monstrous enemies in North American locales..... Flashes of humor lighten the mood at times, but a tone of urgency and imminent danger seems as integral to this series as the last. With appealing new characters within a familiar framework, this spin-off will satisfy the demand for more."―Booklist

Good, but could have been better.
By Leigh
I've really enjoyed this series, and I enjoyed reading this final book. And yet, I still was a little disappointed by the Blood of Olympus.

In some ways it's classic Riordan. Heroes, gods, limited time quest, the world in danger. Check. Heroes of Olympus follows both the 7 demigods quest to stop the giants and Reyna's quest to return the Athena statue to Camp Half-Blood. There's plenty of adventure, humor, and a few dashes of romance along the way. It's a fun read in many ways.

So, why was I disappointed? I missed Percy, for one thing. Point of view characters in this book are Jason, Piper, Reyna, Nico, and Leo. I understand to some degree why Riordan made the narrative choices that he did, but in this final book it would have been nice to hear from Percy and Annabeth one more time.

I also felt that the book shied away from showing the real cost of war. In the Last Olympian there were some losses and deaths that we felt greatly because we had come to care about the characters. We don't see that as much in Blood of Olympus. Yeah, some characters die--mostly people we don't like. And the loss of one of the seven at the end is so heavily telegraphed that we know several chapters ahead who is going to die, why they are going to die, and what the likely escape clause will be. Sacrifice loses its power when you know there's a way out. Those moments in the Last Olympian where we linger and feel the pain, the moments when characters have to make real, hard choices--that's missing.

Another thing I felt Riordan let drop in this book was the issue of Percy's fatal flaw. It's been mentioned consistently throughout the series, but it never came down to that pivotal moment in this book where Percy had to choose the greater good over a friend. I think that's something we may have lost out on by not having a chapter in Percy's viewpoint.

So it's a fun book. We get an entertaining adventure and the expected (very couple-y) happy ending. There's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it mention of Riordan's next series. (Look at the title of his next book if you did miss it). If you've read this far with Percy, absolutely finish it up. It's a good book. But it's not the book it could have been.

Good book but I missed Percy!
By St. Jack's Fan
This was a good book but did not rise to the level of Riordan's other work. As others have pointed out, the climactic battle scene was not nearly as well developed as the final battle in "Last Olympian" with which it inevitably must be compared. Also, after the endlessly repeated references to Percy's "fatal flaw," where was it? For that matter, why were Percy and Annabeth relegated to virtually minor character status in this book? They're the two characters who sucked us all into this series in the first place; they deserved a greater role in the ending of it. While Nico and Reyna are interesting characters and had their own parts to play, I think Riordan found them much more interesting than they warrant; they dominated much of the book in ways that were not always essential to the plot. Percy and Annabeth had very small parts and pretty much a brush-off in the conclusion. Not a nice way to treat your heroes!

I feel bad criticizing since I am a devoted fan of the series, but this was not the big finish I had hoped it would be. I got the distinct impression that in some ways, Riordan had already emotionally moved on to the Norse series -- not unexpectedly, since the first book in that series in due out in one year. His fans know that Norse mythology was always his first love, and like all his other fans I am looking forward to that series also. And yes, he neatly dropped the setup for the lead character in BoO -- looks like it will be a cousin of Annabeth. So maybe we can hope for the occasional future reference to Percy and Annabeth there.

Even given my disappointment with this final volume, it's still far better than 99.9% of the books out there. **Spoiler alert: I am grateful that Riordan didn't succumb to the cheap trick of killing off any of his heroes. Too many authors use that as a bogus way of generating sentiment. Thank goodness he respects his characters and his audience!** What Riordan has done in shoring up Greek and Roman mythology as some of the seminal pillars of Western thought and literature -- which they are -- is reason enough to be grateful for the series. The fact that the books are so entertaining, well-written, and have such engaging characters earns them a place in the highest rankings of modern literature, YA or otherwise.

Thanks for the memories, Uncle Rick, and Godspeed to Asgard!

A step down from the previous books in the series.
By Amazon Customer
I'm going to start by saying that I have been a HUGE fan of this series since I first read the Lightning Thief 4 years ago. I have freaked out when the books were about to be released, and agonized when I had to wait. The PJ&O and HoO series are two of my favorites ever. Each book in the Heroes of Olympus has built on the previous one in the series, raising the bar higher as each book came out, better then the one before.

Which is why I'm disappointed with this rather confusing, anticlimactic ending.

***SPOILERS BELOW. You have been warned.

Let me start with what I liked. Overall, I did enjoy this book. Riordan has a unique writing style that I really enjoy reading, and all of his characters rock. They've all been fleshed out incredibly well, and though they have their flaws, they're all loveable.

I LOVED hearing more about Reyna's past. It was super interesting to see her powers, and to see (well, briefly see) the complicated relationship between her and her sister. Reading about the ghosts of her past (literally and figuratively) was one of the most enjoyable parts of the book, and it was very satisfying to finally understand her more fully.

Getting a peek into Nico's mind was highly anticipated, and, in my opinion, did not disappoint. This kid has had it rough, and has never allowed himself to talk to anyone about his problems. Seeing him begin to heal through this book was *so* important for my peace of mind. It was so nice seeing him finally begin to lean on others for a change, and see him open up.

The relationships between Percy and Jason, and Piper and Annabeth were AWESOME. I LOVED the way both sets of characters worked together and formed even closer bonds.

There's more, I'm sure, but I'm itching (unfortunately) to talk about the massive issues I had with this book.

1) Percy and Annabeth.
Listen, I know they have had plenty of time in the spotlight previously, and they've had POVS in the middle three books of this series. But I was so looking forward to reading more about how Tartarus affected them mentally. Yes, we see Annabeth cry and talk to Piper about it, and yes, we see Percy talk to Jason about it. But I'm sorry (not really), that's not good enough. Even though we hear about their plans for the future, I really didn't feel we got much closure for these two, which is super disappointing after the long journey we've had with them. Reducing their characters to almost nothing in the final book of the series was one of the most annoying parts of this book.

2) The Physicians Cure.
NO. Riordan has been hyping up the fact that he was going to kill off one of the main characters since the beginning of the HoO series. This felt like a HUGE cop out to me. Leo's sacrifice didn't feel like it meant anything since he just came right back to life. In The Last Olympian, multiple characters died (Silena, Beckendorf, Luke), but they had fitting, honorable deaths, and their deaths were an important part of the war. Adding that sense of loss made TLO feel more real. Whereas everyone seemed to have happy endings in this book.

3) The entire ending. It was just confusing, and really all over the place. The battles were good, but not as awesome as I was expecting. The Gods coming down to fight with the seven was pretty epic, I'll admit, but it seemed so easy, and it was over so quickly. The battle at Camp Half-Blood was just kind of boring. Like okay, they're fighting a bunch of monsters. And then Gaea shows up, and she's about to wreak havoc, but no Leo grabs her and brings her up in the air. Just... meh.

4) The Oracle/prophecy's being over.
This just made me really sad, and I felt like he did this just so he wouldn't have to write another "Great Prophecy". I mean, c'mon! This could've been written way better than it was.

5) Percy's and Jason's "decisions" for the great prophecy.
When was "the sacrifice that Percy would be unable to make"? During the fight at Camp? What about Jason's? Anticlimactic. Just a real let down.

And that's a short-ish list of what's coming to mind right now. I'll probably revise it later, clean it up and update it, but this is all I've got for now. I think waiting a few days will make me more clear-headed about the issues I had with it, but I wanted to pour out my thoughts while they were still fresh in my mind.

Overall, 3/5 stars. A decent book, but a confusing and disappointing end to a great series.

About the Author

Susan Ferguson is Professor of Sociology at Grinnell College, where she has taught for almost 20 years. Ferguson regularly teaches Introduction to Sociology, and her critically acclaimed anthology, "Mapping the Social Landscape: Readings in Sociology" (McGraw-Hill, 2010) is used in introductory classes around the country. Ferguson also teaches courses on the family, medical sociology, the Sociology of the Body, and a new seminar on social inequality and identity. Ferguson has published in all of these areas, including the research collection, "Breast Cancer: Society Shapes an Epidemic" (with co-editor Anne Kasper, Palgrave, 2000), and "Shifting the Center: Understanding Contemporary Families" (McGraw-Hill, 2011). In addition, Ferguson is the General Editor for Contemporary Family Perspectives, which is a series of research monographs and short texts on the family (Sage Publications).

Ferguson, who grew up in a working class family in Colorado, still considers the Rocky Mountains to be her spiritual home. A first-generation college student, Ferguson was able to attend college with the help of scholarships, work study, and financial loans. She majored in Political Science and Spanish and also completed certificates of study in Women s Studies and Latin American Studies. After working a couple of years for a large research grant sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, Ferguson entered graduate school and completed her master s degree in sociology at Colorado State University and her Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Her areas of study are gender, family, women s health, and pedagogy, but her primary enthusiasm is for teaching.

Shifting the Idea of "Textbook"
By Amazon Customer
This is a great compilation. The readings cover a wide variety of family, social, and intersectional issues with well-researched data and, for the most part, very readable voices. It's been my favorite "textbook" as an undergrad.

Interesting book
By Andrei Hippix
The book came on time and in the good conditions. The renter is legit. This text was part of the Sociology course of family structure. Found it interesting and somewhat controversial.

A Great Guide to Maintaining a Webcomic
By T. Henkle
Almost as soon as I finished "How to Make Webcomics," I delved into "The Webcomics Handbook," by Brad Guigar.
The author makes two distinctions about his book right away.
First, it is a compilation of notes, posts and articles gleaned from his site Webcomics.com as a one-source guide, even for subscribers.
Second, "The Webcomics Handbook" is not an art manual. You'll find no guidelines on writing or drawing. Instead, this book covers the business and social aspects of running a webcomic.
Some of the material can found in "How to Make Webcomics" (printed in 2008), but it has been updated, or revised.
Aside from a few typos & syntax errors in the first two chapters, and the last chapter; I found the book informative and about as entertaining as "How to Make Webocomics."
I say "about as entertaining," only because I enjoyed the cross-talk and banter between the authors in the previous book.

Maybe a little "lterary license" but, by and large, true!
By Amazon Customer
Having read some of the earlier reviews I thought that it might be enlightening to provide a little bit of background for "The Tracker" and its author, Tom Brown, Jr.
I have hunted and fished and loved the outdoors all of my life. When I first read "The Tracker" I was immediately fascinated with the thought that there still might be a master tracker and survivalist somewhere in the world and that if even 50% of "The Tracker" was true, I had to find this guy!!! First of all, though, I searched out and read everything I could by Tom Brown and began to realize just how little I knew about the "real" world. I finally contacted the publisher of "The Tracker" and was directed to a P.O. Box number in New Jersey. I wrote to Tom about the possibility of learning from him and was rewarded by being informed that he operated an outdoors school. I began to attend classes there and judged for myself if Tom was the person he claimed. My conclusion is-- that he can do everything he claims (and I have seen him do some stuff that just leaves you shaking your head). Countless newspaper stories in New Jersey and elsewhere documenting his ability to find lost people (some of whom didn't necessarily want to be found) attest to his tracking ability. His favorite phrase seems to be, "Prove me wrong!". He is confident of his ability and genuinely wants you to be able to do the same things he does. Don't let the fact that our lives are pretty much consumed by the day to day struggle to survive blind you to the fact that there is a fantastic world out there and try to remember that you once knew about it when you were young and your mind was open. "The Tracker" is a great read that you can take as fiction OR fact and enjoy equally!! Be careful, though, because it may have the same effect as the little pill in "The Matrix" and you may "wake up". In any case, it will at least remind you of how life used to be when you were young and everything was fascinating!!!

A Wonderful and Enjoyable Resource on Tracking, WIlderness Survival and More
By Dick N.
Some reviewers have been critical or skeptical of this book and/or it's author. My latest purchase of this book was as a gift, for a young relative who's going thru training for position as a Game Warden. My own copy was purchased many years ago, after learning of it thru other boys in my sons' Boy Scout troop at the time. There were no reviews by others that biased my view or appreciation of it at that time.

I read the book thru cover-to-cover, and learned many things - about 'how to track', basic wilderness survival considerations and methods ...and about life from 'different perspectives.' Whatever criticisms some reviewers recorded in Amazon many years later, I didn't experience or consider them worth remembering. Some of the 'promotional wording' on the cover really doesn't relate to what I got out of the book. This is just too good - as instruction, as appreciation, and even just basic enjoyment.

One of the most significant 'lessons' was what he described as Stalking Wolf's (Grandfather's) primary (or only?) teaching method. Unlike many "how to" books (like the typical Boy Scout Manual of the time), Grandfather never 'told them' to "do this or do that" in response to some situation. What he did (entirely, it seems, from my memory of reading it long ago) was to ask questions ...which provoked the boys to use their powers of observation and thinking processes to learn for themselves about the situations he placed them in, or pointed them toward.

If someone is interested in learning about basics of tracking and/or wilderness survival, I don't think this is a resource they should overlook ...unless they're already very advanced from other 'hands on' training (maybe Special Forces or Ranger training? I never experienced those myself, so can't compare it).

We did a chapter a day and found it the greatest adventure book ever
By jacqueline m leonard
I found this at the library 20 years ago and read it to our 2 young daughters. We did a chapter a day and found it the greatest adventure book ever. After reading this book, I went on to read all of the books Tom Brown wrote concerning his further adventures and instruction from Grandfather in the natural and spiritual order.

If you could have any animal's front teeth, whose would you choose?

WHAT IF YOU HAD ANIMAL TEETH? takes children on a fun, informative, and imaginative journey as they explore what it would be like if their own front teeth were replaced by those of a different animal. Featuring a dozen animals (beaver, great white shark, narwhal, elephant, rattlesnake, naked mole rat, hippopotamus, crocodile, and more), this book explores how different teeth are especially adapted for an animal's survival. At the end of the book, children will discover why their own teeth are just right for them. And they'll also get a friendly reminder to take good care of their teeth, because they're the only teeth they'll ever have. Each spread features a photograph of the animal using its specialized teeth on the left and a humorous illustrated image of a child using that animal's teeth on the right.

From Booklist
Losing a first tooth is a memorable milestone in the life of a young person. Markle uses this universal experience to pose a relevant, though slightly unsettling, scientific inquiry: “But what if an animal’s teeth grew in, instead?” In a fashion germane to her audience, she presents interesting animal trivia via examples and common happenings in their own lives—for example, if you had naked mole rat teeth, you could operate them separately like chopsticks. McWilliam’s huge-jawed illustrations, such as a young Inuit fishing with a narwhal tusk or a frustrated student mowing through his math book with a beaver’s orange-colored incisors, are somehow both hilarious and terrifying. Meanwhile, photos of open-mouthed animals accompany the text. Though perhaps not the best choice for the nightmare-prone, this will surely satisfy animal enthusiasts and trivia lovers, and dentists and parents will appreciate the mention of ways to keep human chompers healthy. Grades 1-3. --Erin Anderson

well illustrated comparative anatomy book for kids
By sweetitarian
This book is very engaging - especially relevant for kids just starting to loose their teeth. The animals include traditional selections such as an elephant and lesser known animals like a naked mole rat. The format has a good rhythm - the left page talks about the unique features of the animals' teeth, and the right page shows an illustration of what a child would look like with that animal's teeth. It's a good length; a variety of examples with colorful illustrations and a succinct amount of text on each page.

Super cute book for a loose tooth "tooth fairy" book...most of those types of books appeal to girls, this one is great for boys and girls! Good easy and educational read. My son's front teeth were coming in when we read it, he read it everyday that week and I took it to school for guest reading!
